Jan Brueghel the Elder spent a number of years in Rome, where he regularly collaborated with the German artist Hans Rottenhammer. In this landscape we see Joseph and Mary taking a rest during their flight into Egypt – Mary has taken the opportunity to feed the baby Jesus. The picture was started by Rottenhammer, who painted the angels and the Holy Family. Brueghel then took over, adding the wooded landscape, flowers and donkey.
