This portrait shows an older couple: Jacob Feitama (64) and Elisabeth de Haan (55). Hendriks placed the couple in a salon with painted wallpaper, a flowered carpet and elegant furniture. Originally, one of their daughters, Maria, stood on the left, but she was painted over when she married an officer against her parents’ wishes.

Besides being a painter, Hendriks was also a curator of the Teylers Museum in Haarlem. He painted mainly landscapes, still-lifes and portraits.
