The Roman patroness is seated on a throne. At her feet lies a she-wolf suckling twins – the symbol of Rome. The young Emperor Constantine is standing on the right in shining armour.

Rubens made this oil sketch as one of the designs for a series of tapestries about Emperor Constantine, commissioned by the French king Louis XIII. This was the only design not executed in the series.
