King Willem I and his wife Queen Wilhelmina of Prussia played an important role in the formation of the Mauritshuis collection. As a young princess, Wilhelmina was portrayed by the German portrait painter Tischbein in pastels. This lends the fresh-faced young Wilhelmina the appearance of porcelain and makes her seem a little powdery.

Several versions of this youthful portrait are known. How this one arrived at the Mauritshuis is a mystery; it was discovered in the museum attic in 1841.
