The woman reading here is the very young Wilhelmina of Prussia. She was barely sixteen when she was married to Prince Willem V, the stadholder of Holland. Shortly after their wedding, the couple had their portrait painted several times by the Danish painter Ziesenis.

The bride was the niece of the Prussian king Frederick the Great. She turned out to be considerably more decisive than her husband.
