Pieter Saenredam
The Interior of the Cunerakerk in Rhenen

On view in Room 15

The Haarlem painter Saenredam specialised in Dutch church interiors. He based his paintings on precise drawings that he made on site. In several different towns, he visited impressive old churches, such as the Gothic St Cunera Church in Rhenen.

There is a sense of great tranquillity in the space. This is created by Saenredam’s clear way of working, the even lighting and the well-balanced composition.
