The International Friends of the Mauritshuis are delighted to invite you to participate in a workshop to create your own ceramic Dutch canal houses. The distinctive step-gabled houses have featured in numerous paintings since the seventeenth century, including masterpieces in the Mauritshuis collection.
You have a choice of attending the workshop on one of two afternoons: Sunday 11 or Tuesday 13 February. Both workshops will last three hours and will take place in the Kunstwerkplaats (art studio) in the Mauritshuis, starting at 14:00. The workshop leader, Alexandra Breeze, studied ceramics and printmaking at university, then became a qualified teacher of art and design, and now runs her own ceramics studio.
During the workshop, Alexandra will demonstrate the methods used to create two-dimensional canal houses using clay. All equipment and materials will be provided, including enough clay for each participant to make a row of four different canal houses. Once participants have made their Dutch houses, the creations will be carefully packaged and labelled before Alexandra takes them to her studio for the final steps of glazing and firing. The final product, which will be mounted on white artboard, will be available for collection about 4-6 weeks after the workshop.
The workshop is also suitable for children to attend, although Alexandra recommends a minimum age of 12.
