Jan Davidsz De Heem Stilleven Met Boeken En Een Viool 1628 MH 0613 Mauritshuis

The International Friends of the Mauritshuis are delighted to invite you to join and your guests to participate in a workshop where you can try your hand at seventeenth-century style writing and printing.

Formerly called the Meermanno Museum and now the world’s oldest book museum, the beautiful building on Prinsessegracht 30 was originally home to Johann Meermann (1751-1815), a renowned collector of books, paintings and rare manuscripts. His younger cousin, Baron Van Westreenen van Tiellandt, developed the collection further and, on his death, the house with its magnificent collection of books dating back to the sixth century, was bequeathed to the state and became a museum.

Good to know

The workshops will take place in the huge attic of the museum, which has been converted into a scriptorium and printing studio, complete with historic printing press. You have a choice of attending on one of two afternoons: Sunday 17 or Tuesday 19 November. Both workshops will last three hours and will include a brief tour of the museum followed by a hands-on demonstration in the scriptorium where you will be instructed in the art of seventeenth-century letter writing with quill and ink. You will also have the opportunity to use the printing press to create a printed image. This workshop is suitable for children to attend, and the museum recommends a minimum age of 12.
