We are delighted to invite you to our final event for the 2022/23 season, which will take place in the afternoon of Wednesday 14 June. This fascinating interactive lecture will be a feast for the senses as it focuses a spotlight on velvet as a luxurious textile of influence and power in society through the ages.
The lecture will be delivered by Dr Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood, a world-renowned textile archaeologist, founding director of the Textile Resource Centre in Leiden, and an award-winning author and editor of numerous reference books on embroidery, textiles and world dress.
Gillian will share her knowledge of the technical, historical, artistic and social elements of velvet, including its development over the past millennia as one of the world’s most luxurious textiles. During the lecture, participants will have the opportunity to touch a range of exceptional velvets, and also admire (without touching) a special collection of rare historic velvets.
The lecture will take place in the Nassauzaal of the Mauritshuis. Participants are encouraged to come dressed in an item of velvet if they wish, and also bring with them one item of velvet to show the group. After a question-and-answer time with Gillian, we will then move to the Brasserie for celebratory drinks and nibbles, and further opportunities to talk about textiles with Gillian and other International Friends.
