The Standard Bearer at the Mauritshuis

Rembrandt’s masterpiece on tour

De Vaandeldrager, 1636, Rembrandt van Rijn.

1 – 30 November 2022

Light falls on a man’s face. Follow the light as it dances along his arm and you see a fist firmly planted in his side. This is Rembrandt’s The Standard Bearer, a masterpiece that after centuries is in Dutch ownership again. To celebrate this fact, the painting travels around the Netherlands for an entire year. Throughout the month of November you can come and enjoy it at the Mauritshuis.

Rembrandts at the Mauritshuis

The Standard Bearer will be in good company. Our collection includes eleven paintings we know were painted by Rembrandt, including some of his most famous and popular works like The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp (1632), Two African Men (1661) and his final Self-portrait (1669).

6 november gratis entree

At all the museums mentioned above, visitors are treated to a day's free visit. On Sunday 6 November, The Standard-Bearer is free to visit for everyone,* but the rest of the Mauritshuis is also free to visit that day, including the Manhattan Masters exhibition.

*Free admission does require a ticket. The ticket can be ordered online. Choose the 'separate time slot ticket' option.

Rembrandt Association

The purchase of The Standard Bearer would not have been possible without the Rembrandt Association, an organisation with a membership of more than sixteen thousand art lovers whose common goal is to make the finest art accessible to all. The association supports art collection, conservation and research.

On 6 November, the Rembrandt Association is organising a special programme for its members. Entitled 'Wake Up with Rembrandt', it will include a reception with refreshments, a lecture by art historian Hilbert Lootsma and, of course, a chance to view the painting. The event is free of charge for members of the Rembrandt Association (guests welcome), who will also receive a special gift publication on the painting.
