Granting and bequeathing

Supporting the Mauritshuis as a private individual

Our museum has existed for two hundred years, but the roots of our collection go back even further. At its core are the paintings that King William inherited from his father, Stadtholder William V. In the early nineteenth century the king gifted those paintings to the new State of the Netherlands, and they eventually became the basis of our collection. Since then, many collectors have helped expand and maintain our collection through gifts and bequests.

You too can make an important contribution to the museum. Any gift, however large or small, is special to us, for behind each one there is a story. We are keen to hear them all, as the Mauritshuis is to us, above all else, a house full of stories that we just can’t get enough of.

Passing on stories together

At the Mauritshuis, we are aware that it is our job to pass on the stories behind our collection in an appropriate way to the next generation. Over the next few years, we are looking for your help to find new ways of telling those stories. We want our museum to be a place where everyone can be themselves, as we build the Mauritshuis of the future: an open house where human stories and perspectives prompt reflection and imaginative responses. And we can’t do that without your support.

There are all kinds of ways that your gift might be used. There are also attractive tax benefits, which we would be happy to share details of. Marjolijn Peeters and Annewil Nieuwenhuizen of our gifts and bequests team would be delighted to tell you more about our dreams and ambitions for a museum that is ready for the future.

If you would like to make a gift now, you may make a one-off donation to account number NL02ABNA0516425129, account holder Stichting Koninklijk Kabinet van Schilderijen Mauritshuis.

Dreams and ambitions

Over the next few years, our attention will be devoted to four thematic focuses and a number of inspiring forthcoming projects. You can if you wish directly support a particular project or theme. As a supporter, you will be involved in all our activities, as well as receiving invitations to special events.

How can you help?

There are various ways to help us realise our ambitions and dreams for the future. We would be happy to tell you more about the options on a one-to-one basis. You can choose to support one of our four themes, for example, or a specific project.

Other possibilities include a one-off or regular donation, a named endowment fund or a bequest to the Mauritshuis. We would be delighted to personally discuss the options.

One-off or regular donation
  • You can support us with a one-off or regular donation. We are keen to connect with our benefactors, and appreciate their active involvement. If you spread your donation out over five years, it is generally 100% tax-deductible.

  • If you pledge € 5000 or more, we will be happy to discuss with you how your gift is to be allocated to one of the four themes. Or you might prefer to adopt a project, possible with a minimum donation of € 10,000. You will of course be fully involved.
Named edownment fund

If you establish a named endowment fund, you will be able to decide in consultation with us what the name of your fund should be and what your gift is spent on. A named endowment fund can be established with a minimum donation of € 50,000, in the form of a one-off or regular donation, or a bequest. We will keep you fully informed of the projects supported by your fund.

Bequests to the Mauritshuis
  • More and more fans of our museum are naming the Mauritshuis as a beneficiary in their will. We would love to talk to you about this option. Experience has shown that it is better for all concerned to take plenty of time to consider the matter. We will be happy to discuss what your bequest might mean to the museum.

  • There are various ways to leave money to the Mauritshuis. You can name the museum as a (co-)beneficiary of your will, or include a specific bequest (a specified sum, or item of movable or immovable property) for the museum. Your legal advisor will be able to give you more information.

Friendship

You can also support us by becoming a Friend, International Friend, ‘Compaan’, Benefactor or a member of the American Friends, the Dutch Masters Foundation or the Johan Maurits Compagnie.

Friends of the Mauritshuis

Friends are vital to the Mauritshuis. The Friends of the Mauritshuis have been supporting us for over thirty years, contributing to acquisitions and exhibitions.

Some magnificent artworks have been added to our collection with the support of the Friends, including Whirl of Life by Bibi Smit and Roses in a Glass Vase by Jacob van Hulsdonck. The Friends have also support special exhibitions, including the recent Roelant Savery’s Wondrous World (2024) and The Lost Museum (2024/2025).

We organise lots of lectures, excursions, openings and other activities for Friends by way of thanks.

American Friends of the Mauritshuis

The American Friends of the Mauritshuis was established in 1982 with the goal of strengthening ties between the Mauritshuis and American fans of seventeenth-century Dutch painting. As an American Friend of the Mauritshuis you can help preserve the museum’s collection, both now and in the future.

Fulbright Fellowship

A partnership with the Fulbright Foundation allows the American Friends of the Mauritshuis to offer a fellowship to American students of restoration and conservation. The funding allows them to spend a year gaining practical experience in the museum’s conservation workshop. The workshop always strives to perform research of the highest standard using the best technology available, making it an ideal place for students to learn.

Dutch Masters Foundation

The Dutch Masters Foundation was established in the United Kingdom in 2010, as an initiative of the Mauritshuis in collaboration with the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest and the Nederlands Dans Theater. This UK charity supports educational projects run by the three founding organisations.

British taxpayers who donate to the Dutch Masters Foundation may be eligible for tax benefits.
